French as a Second Language
Bonjour. Bienvenue à l’école Virginia Park.
Our students begin learning French as a Second Language in grade four and continue in grades five and six. We use many methods in class starting with AIM (Accelerated Integrated Method). A key component of this program is the Gesture Approach which is used to teach the high frequency vocabulary that is essential in the oral acquisition of French. Our program is art and literacy based which specifically uses stories that are written in the play format. These stories, along with music and dance, serve to motivate and support the students while they develop confidence and competence in the language.
There is an equal emphasis on the development of all four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) meeting the needs of all language learners. Activities are varied, so students have the opportunity to work individually, in partners, with small groups and the whole class.
Each grade has specific themes as outlined by the program of studies. Challenging and exciting projects are designed to engage the students to create and demonstrate their understanding of French.
Ici, nous aimons parler en français!
Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI)
The Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention Program is a small-group, literacy intervention designed to help students develop literacy strategies and improve their reading abilities, targeting word recognition and reading comprehension. Powerful 30 minute, leveled instruction is offered four days a week. Through sequentially designed lessons and engaging leveled books, LLI supports learning in both reading and writing, and helps students master their knowledge of language and words and how they work.
Middle Years Literacy Intervention (MYLI)
Edmonton Public Schools’ Middle Years Literacy Intervention Program is a small-group, supplementary literacy intervention designed for students in grades 3 to 9. Engaging 45 minute, leveled instruction is offered four days a week. Teachers determine specific areas of need in reading and writing for each child using initial assessments and ongoing monitoring. Leveled instruction is provided during each lesson to support word recognition, reading comprehension and knowledge of language and words and how they work.
At Virginia Park School, we want all our students to have an increased awareness of the role technology plays in their learning. By providing them with opportunities to access and incorporate technology into their daily learning, the world becomes easily accessible and barrier free. Our students see how technology can be used to support innovation and discovery as well as to design and create knowledge.
At Virginia Park, all classrooms are equipped with Smartboards and document cameras. Students also have access to Chromebooks, laptops, and iPads.
